HTC nearly doubles resolution in new Vive VR headset

The HTC Vive is stepping up its game a notch in the graphics department.

At the CES trade fair in Las Vegas last week, HTC unveiled the Vive Pro virtual reality glasses with an upgraded display featuring 78% better resolution than previous models.

This brings the VR headset's display to a resolution of 2,880 by 1,600 pixels.

The glasses have also been redesigned based on more than 1,000 customer reviews and industry feedback. The glasses are now lighter and more customisable, with improved balance.

Vive project manager Daniel O'Brien discussed the glasses' clearer and more realistic display, which will also be able to show easily legible lettering in virtual reality, trouble-free.

Due to the displays' increased resolution, pixel density also increases significantly. Instead of 448 pixels per inch (ppi), the HTC Vive Pro delivers images at an improved 615 ppi.

The first HTC Vive Pro models will become available this quarter, initially as an upgrade for existing customers, with complete sets following later in the year. HTC has yet to name any prices. - dpa
